This week’s lenten invitation to HUNGER is inspired by Marlena Graves’ excerpt originally in The Way Up is Down.
Pray:
Take a moment to breathe for a few minutes, then pray with your breath.
Inhale: Blessed are those who hunger.
Exhale: They will be filled
Meditate:
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger
and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Matthew 5:3-6
Consider:
“My daily and desperate need for him and the physical hunger I sometimes experienced as a child—emptiness—was sort of an involuntary fast. It all coalesced into my constant awareness of the manifest presence of God, into his always being on my mind, ever before me. And yet, on some days, I still find myself empty.”
- What are the things you hunger for?
- What are the righteous things you long to see filled?
- What keeps you from asking for them from God?
Practice:
Prepare a bowl of grapes, berries, or popcorn, etc. As you pop each one into your mouth identify what you are hungry for God to do in your family, community, and in the world.
